Pre-rolls: what to know before you buy a joint off the shelf
What is actually inside a pre-roll, how to spot a good one, infused vs regular, and why pre-rolls are the best-selling format for beginners.

A pre-roll is exactly what it sounds like: a joint rolled for you, sold in a tube. They are the least intimidating item on a dispensary menu: no grinder, no papers, no skill required, and single-unit prices that make trying a new strain cheap. Here is how to buy a good one.
What is inside matters most
Pre-rolls are made from full flower buds, “shake” (small pieces that fall off buds in the jar), or trim (leaf material, the lowest grade). Full-flower pre-rolls smoke closest to a hand-rolled joint from bud; shake is a fine budget choice from a reputable brand; trim-heavy pre-rolls burn harsh. Brands that proudly say “whole flower” usually mean it; vague labels usually mean shake.
Sizes and formats
Standard sizes are half-gram and full-gram. Multi-packs of mini pre-rolls (often called dogwalkers, ~0.35 g each) are ideal for light users who want one short session without relighting a stale half-joint. Blunts use a thicker wrap and burn longer.
Infused pre-rolls are a different animal
An infused pre-roll adds concentrate (kief dusting, distillate coating, or diamonds inside), pushing potency far above regular flower. They are popular and often great value per milligram, but they are NOT beginner products. If you are new, smoke a regular pre-roll; save infused for when you know your tolerance.
Freshness checks
Look for a packaged-on date within the last few months, and give the tube a gentle shake. A rock-hard, dried-out pre-roll rattles. Shops with high turnover keep fresher stock, which is one more reason busy dispensaries with good reviews are a safe default.
Frequently asked questions
Are pre-rolls weaker than regular flower?
Not inherently. A full-flower pre-roll is the same bud you would grind yourself. Budget pre-rolls made from shake or trim can feel weaker or harsher. Check the label’s THC percentage and whether it says whole flower.
How do I keep a half-smoked pre-roll?
Stub it out fully, let it cool, and cap it back in its tube. It will taste noticeably worse the next day, which is exactly the problem multi-packs of minis were invented to solve.
